Mouzon-LerouxVerzy, Montagne de Reims

Producer profile
PL producer making a collection of champagnes focused on biodynamically farmed 100% Verzy grapes. 8 hectares in the village has been farmed biodynamically since 2008. Vinification is done in oak barrels and enameled-steel tanks. "Richly textured" NV L'Atavique and "even more detailed and expressive" L'Ineffable Blanc de Noirs are "good places to start". L'Angélique Blanc de Blancs "shows opulent ripeness, tethered by the linear structure of the northern Montagne de Reims". L'Opiniâtre and L'Incandescent "saignée rosé from chalky parcels" are also recommended. Coolest names! "Mouzon's style is one of vibrant depth and voluptuous presence on the palate." An "up-and-coming" member of the Club Trésors de Champagne with the debut 2012 vintage. Also a member of Des Pieds et des Vins. TyS "The Mouzon family has been growing vines since 1776 and bottling its own champagnes since 1930." All 50 plots are vinified separately. Every cuvee is wild-fermented, in keeping with the natural approach, and after ageing is not fined or filtered. "One of the lowest levels of sulphur dioxide in Champagne". Recently, "the natural pendulum has swung too far", "barrel fermentation begins to dominate", and "low-sulphur regime impacts freshness and integrity." ToS "a family enterprise established in 1938." "Some cuvees can be spoiled by an amylic aroma or a certain rusticity, although they can be saved by the richness of flavour." TT 2019 Champagne catalog page 224 (see also 2018).

L'Incandescent. 2013 pinot noir, 50% vinified in oak, unfiltered, with natural yeasts. Disgorged September 2016, dosage 3g. Very detailed description on the back! Vigorous tight cork. Pretty label of textured paper the color of bone with art deco aesthetic and a matching matte beige neck foil. Light salmon in color with foamy mousse and streaming jets of bubbles. Associations with apple and sour cherry compote. There is something else in the nose, unique, creamy, flinty.. cold cheddar? Bright acidity and pleasant lees. TT 2019 Champagne catalog page 225 (see also 2018). Purchased at Federal Wine in spring 2020 for $65. ⭐
